ABOUT US
Hope for Deaf Africans (HDA UK) is a charity based in the United Kingdom, founded in 2018 by people who are themselves Deaf and have experienced firsthand the challenges and difficulties that Deaf people in Africa face. We are registered with the Charity Commission, and our charity registration number is 1196200.
Deaf people in several African countries, including Burundi, Malawi, South Sudan, Senegal, Chad, Ghana, Tanzania, and Nigeria, continue to experience inequality of access to quality education in line with the World Federation of the Deaf’s positional paper on inclusive education for the Deaf. Access to healthcare remains a stumbling block to well-being and wellness, and where little access is possible, communication with the wider society and sources of support has affected Deaf people’s confidence. As a result, a large part of the Deaf population, without access to education, health, and opportunities for quality inclusion in everyday activities of their community through gainful employment and/or the use of their individual skills by way of apprenticeship, has had to contend with untreated mental health issues.
Hope for Deaf African UK (HDA-UK) is committed to employing diverse interventions through carefully packaged programs of support to ensure that Deaf Africans are reached with the help and support they need.

Our vision is to give hope and support to Deaf Africans and help them achieve and reach their potential.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to work together with Deaf organizations and communities in Africa to overcome social, socio-economic, health issues (including mental health, HIV/AIDS, etc.), and educational barriers that hold Deaf people in Africa back from achieving individual and collective aspirations.
We are Deaf people, professionals in our own right, living in the UK, passionate about the problems and issues that Deaf people of Africa encounter in their daily lives. As Deaf Africans living in the UK, we share in these traumatic experiences, and our desire is to work with others to bring relief and succour to Deaf Africans.
WHAT WE DO
PARTNERSHIP AND SUPPORT
We work in partnership with local people, local groups, and Deaf-led institutions to identify the most cost-effective interventions that support Deaf Africans in a dignified way.
RESEARCH-DRIVEN RESPONSES
Our response to the human sufferings, traumatic challenges, and untold hardships is driven by research and anchored around programs and activities that are Deaf-led and have substantial input from local Deaf people
LOCAL OWNERSHIP OF INTERVENTIONS
By working with local Deaf Africans in their place of residence, we ensure that they own the problems, and interventions directed at these problems come from their own lived experiences
ADVOCACY AND INCLUSION
We advocate for programs that are inclusive and recognize the unique sign language of local Deaf people as the starting point of all support and interventions.
